PPG Aerospace - Transparencies is a leading and experienced source of original-equipment and replacement windshields, side cockpit windows and passenger-cabin windows for the ATR 42/72 family of aircraft. Operators of ATR-42/72 aircraft know that PPG transparencies have outstanding service life, as shown in PPG in-service reliability studies.
PPG is introducing a new design for the No. 2 side cock-pit window for ATR 42/72 aircraft. Proprietary PR-2060 sealant replaces the polysulfide moisture seal beneath the Z-retainer to enhance moisture barrier properties. A metal insert around the window periphery stiffens the edge and enhances structural integrity. The redesigned configuration provides terminating action for EASA Airworthiness Directive 2009-0159-E and FAA Airworthiness Directive 2009-18-18.
Operators can buy replacement cockpit and passenger-cabin windows from PPG for convenience and time savings of buying directly from a single source for their ATR 42/72 fleet.
SURFACE SEAL® Coating by PPG Surface Seal hydrophobic coating improves the ability of glass-faced windshields to shed water for enhanced visibility during wet conditions and is available for application to PPG windshields for ATR 42/72 aircraft. Surface Seal coating kits are available for field application to windshields on in-service aircraft.
The all glass design for the ATR42/72 features chemically strengthened glass, advanced urethane technology, and ant-ice/anti-fog coatings. The all glass design is based on Herculite® II chemically strengthened glass developed by PPG. Herculite® II is extensively used in commercial, regional, and general aviation aircraft. Herculite® II offers exceptional strength, excellent optical characteristics, and high strength to weight ratio compared to thermally tempered glass.
It is used in transparency systems where designs require high strength to weight ratio, high performance, and long service life. Additionally, it offers greater damage tolerance and scratch resistance as a result of its high surface hardness. The unique properties of Herculite® II chemically strengthened glass allow lightweight cockpit windows to be designed for structural, load bearing applications. For these applications, aircraft loads are transferred through the cockpit window, thus allowing for reduced weight in the fuselage structure.
Since its introduction, Herculite® II chemically strengthened glass has been field proven in all cockpit window applications for both structural and nonstructural applications. Herculite® II is used on other regional, commercial, and regional aircraft.
