The PPG windshields and cockpit windows are constructed of three glass plies for unmatched durability, exceptional fit in the airframe and greater resistance to delamination. The design takes advantage of the inherent benefits of glass to provide superior chemical, abrasion and scratch resistance on inboard and outboard surfaces as well as optical clarity. The all glass design for the windshields features chemically strengthened glass, advanced urethane technology, and ant-ice/anti-fog coatings. The all glass design is based on Herculite® II chemically strengthened glass developed by PPG. The outstanding properties of Herculite® II allow designers to meet the challenging operating envelope for Saab 340/2000 aircraft.
Herculite® II is used in transparency systems where designs require high strength to weight ratio, high performance, and long service life. Additionally, it offers greater damage tolerance and scratch resistance as a result of its high surface hardness. The unique properties of Herculite® II chemically strengthened glass allow lightweight cockpit windows to be designed for structural, load bearing applications. For these applications, aircraft loads are transferred through the cockpit window, thus allowing for reduced weight in the fuselage structure.
Since its introduction, Herculite® II chemically strengthened glass has been field proven in all cockpit window applications for both structural and nonstructural applications. Herculite® II is used on other regional, commercial, and regional aircraft.
SURFACE SEAL® Coating by PPG Surface Seal coating is available on all PPG glass windshields for the Saab 340/2000 fleet. Surface Seal hydrophobic coating dramatically improves the ability of the windshields to shed water, providing the ultimate in visibility for pilots during wet conditions.
When ordering your spare windshields from PPG, ask for Surface Seal coating. The parts can be coated by the PPG professionals at the factory before they ship, or the coating can be field applied to windshields on in-service aircraft with Surface Seal coating system kits.
